With the Real Madrid defence looking like one of the weakest parts of the team it is understandable that Bernd Schuster wishes to extend the contract of Fabio Cannavaro sooner rather than later...Real Madrid might have looked impressive so far this season but there have still been signs that their defence is frail and could well be their Achilles' heel in the long run. The most notable illustration of this weakness was against newly promoted Numancia where they conceded three times and they will be keen to improve at the back. Therefore, it is is understandable that with Fabio Cannavaro's contract expiring next summer coach Bernd Schuster wishes to tie him down to the club for at least another year. The German coach is believed to have written to Pedja Mijatovic explicitly asking for his renewal and for him it is a non-negotiable subject. He also wants it to be done sooner rather than later as the Italian is free to speak with other clubs after January 1, when he will have just six months to run on his contract. It was thought that with Ezequiel Garay coming in next year and Christoph Metzelder waiting in the wings Cannavaro might not be needed but Schuster seems to think otherwise. Also in favour of him staying are reportedly Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Wesley Sneijder and defensive partner Pepe. Schuster was known to be angry following the transfer window just gone because some of his requests were ignored but it appears that this one could well be make or break for the German.
