Owen To Follow Beckham To Serie A

With David Beckham joining Milan in January, Newcastle United striker Michael Owen may follow the midfielder to Serie A with a summer move to Genoa and he could join them for free, according to Calciomercato. The Englishman has been hampered by injury and is ruled out of the Tyne and Wear derby against Sunderland this weekend following a groin strain. Owen has never been the same player since leaving Liverpool for Real Madrid in 2004 and he has not fulfilled his potential at the Magpies in his three year spell there either. Calciomercato.it claims sources in England have revealed the former Anfield hero is being head hunted by Genoa and he is looked upon as a potential strike partner for the outstanding Diego Milito. Owen's career has stalled at Newcastle and a move abroad could revive the player. The Grifoni are looking to get him on a free transfer as his contract expires soon and the club has not made any attempt to offer him a new deal. Newcastle are going through a crisis period and they may consider releasing Owen at the end of the season. Genoa will push for the 28-year-old but they may be put off by his wage demands.
