UEFA CUP (Wisla 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur)

Even though Wisla went into the second leg one goal down, they will be the more confident of the two sides having convincingly won their last league game 4-0 together with the vital away goal they scored at White Hart Lane meaning they only needed one goal and a clean sheet this evening to progress into the group stages.
Tottenham Hotspur on the other hand are sinking in the Premier League pool. Martin Jol was sacked for less last year, a fact not lost on Juande Ramos, whose player's claim he is starting to feel the pressure. A midweek Europe win would relieve some tension before they host a roaring Hull City... who nearby Arsenal could not even tame last weekend.
Manchester United loan signing Fraizer Campbell was gifted a rare start, perhaps due to his assured performance in the first leg in the absence of a cup tied Pavlyuchenko.
FIRST HALF
The set piece delivery from Spurs in the first half was consistently shoddy. Both Bale and Jenas whipped high passes in with the intention of dropping the ball in the box but the execution ended up beyond touch. Juande Ramos also persisted with a 4-5-1 formation despite not having the necessary midfielders to make it work.
Luka Modric for instance was wasted for much of the game and could not pull the strings and orchestrate affairs as like he had done to such great effect for Dinamo Zagreb or Croatia in the past.
The game's most interesting passages of play arrived two minutes from half time and both were manufactured by Wisla. Radoslaw Sobolewski had the chance to provide a much-needed talking point after being thread through on goal but failed to beat Gomes.
Minutes later Gomes was again called upon to keep Junior Diaz at bay.
SECOND HALF
It would take a gargantuan effort of inebriated pub football to produce another 45 minutes as snooze inducing as the first and ten minutes after the break Gareth Bale sent in a clever cross for a change that seemed to glance in off Fraizer Campbell but was marked as a Glowacki own goal.
With the tie seemingly beyond Wisla, Juande Ramos makes a tactical switch by bringing off Campbell for Jamie O'Hara.
Junior Diaz, Aaron Lennon, and Didier Zokora brewed up a tempest in a teapot with a quarter of an hour left of play when the former reacted in anger when Lennon (perhaps poorly) challenged him. A playground scuffle broke out on cue and all three were booked by referee Alexandru Tudor.
Five minutes later Krakow played their way back into the game courtesy of some disgustingly dire defending from captain Ledley King and former Madridista Jonathon Woodgate. Pawel Brozek received a ball over the top that the Spurs centre backs failed to deal with and Brozek lobbed Gomes who was trying to charge down the Pole.
Tottenham's travelling support were forced into a nervy ending as Brozek could have sent the game into extra time moments later, but his header fell straight into the arms of Spurs' Brazilian goalkeeper. The away side's resistence paid off though and Wisla were knocked out of the Uefa Cup at the very first stage. Tottenham progress to the groups but will have to find some form if they are to avoid a fate similar to that of Krakow's.
