1979 - Born May 19 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
1999 - April: Member of the Uruguayan team that reached the FIFA World Youth Championship semifinals in Nigeria.
2006-April: Member of the Villarreal team that reached the UEFA Champions League semifinals, losing against Arsenal on dramatic style. July: Extends contract with Villarreal until 2010.
2007 - June 30: Agreed to move to Club Atletico de Madrid on a four-year deal reported to be in the region of €21m. July: Represented Uruguay in the Copa America of Venezuela. He scored three goals in 6 matches as they finished in 4th place. July 28: Scored his first goal for Atletico Madrid eleven minutes into his debut in the Intertoto Cup Third round match against Gloria Bistrita.
2008 - April 6: Scored once in Atletico de Madrid's 6-3 defeat of Almeria, to take his personal tally in La Liga to 68 and become the highest-ever Uruguayan goalscorer in the history of the Spanish league. June 17: Scored a hat-trick to help Uruguay rout a shambolic Peru 6-0 in their World Cup qualifier.
2009 - May 23: Scored a 14-minute hat-trick for Atletico Madrid on their La Liga 4-1 defeat of Athletic Bilbao. May 30: Scored his 32nd Liga goal of the season during Club Atletico de Madrid's 3-0 win over UD Almeria to claim the ESM Golden Shoe as Europe's top goalscorer as well as Spain's Pichichi award for the second time. He equalled Prudencio Sanchez's 1940/41 club record of scoring in eight successive league games and became the first player to score 30 goals or more in a Liga season since former FC Barcelona striker Ronaldo hit 34 in 1997.
