Michel Salgado is entering his tenth season for Los Blancos. Speaking to Spanish journalists he reveals what Real have to do in order to claim the Spanish Super Cup, and also claims that Robinho needs to step up a gear...
The Spanish Super Cup pits the victors of La Liga with the Copa Del Rey winners. This year, Real Madrid are again contesting for the trophy, but this time against Valencia.
The first leg was staged at Mestalla where Los Che edged out Madrid in a 3-2 winning display, but Michel Salgado believes Los Merengues can overturn the deficit when they welcome Valencia to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Reflecting on the nature of Valencia's win, Salgado said: "They are best at stealing the ball, and counterattacking... we lost the ball where their most dangerous men play. At the Bernabéu they will defend, waiting to counterattack, but we just have to play our game and recover possession whenever we lose it."
Salgado was subbed during the game and was asked if he believed Bernd Schuster thought he was at fault for the concession of the goals: "No, I don't think so," he explained "I even think the substitution was planned. We allowed Valencia to play as they wanted."
He added: "We will win the tile if we defeat Valencia 1-0, but we'll have to work on our mistakes to win the Super Cup. We should be weary against a quality team like Valencia."
Robinho has been linked with a move to Chelsea, to join up with Luiz 'Big Phil' Scolari. Such accusations have been laughed off by Madrid chiefs. The Brazilian forward began the game as an observer, as he was on the bench.
Solgado, in a stinging statement perhaps aimed at Robinho, said: "The coach knows how fit the players are."
He also said that he will need to step up his game if he is to stay in Spain: "We must be demanding with him... he is capable of making more of a difference on the pitch."
